DR ANTHONY YIP
CARDIOLOGIST
MBBCh (Wits) MSc (Medicine) (Wits) FCP (SA) LLM (Edin) MRCP (UK) Cert. Cardiology (SA) FRCP (Lond) FRCP(Edin) FESC FACC and FSCAI

Dr Anthony Yip was born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa, and attended Sacred Heart College in Observatory before graduating with a medical degree from the University of Witwatersrand in 1997. He completed his specialisation in internal medicine through the University of Witwatersrand’s Internal Medicine Program and qualified as a specialist in 2002. That same year, he became a Fellow of the College of Physicians of South Africa and was awarded Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom after successfully completing the MRCP(UK) examinations in London.

Dr Yip went on to specialise in cardiology under Professor Rafique Essop, again at the University of Witwatersrand, and received his certification in cardiology from the College of Medicine of South Africa in 2006. He has since practiced as a cardiologist for 19 years.

He is trained in both diagnostic and interventional cardiology at CH Baragwanath, and further enriched his expertise through observerships in interventional cardiology with Professor Paolo Rubino (Naples, 2008) and Professor Antonio Colombo (Milan, 2015). He is an experienced interventional cardiologist and was awarded a fellowship from the Society of Cardiovascular Angiology and interventions (FSCAI) in 2018.

While Dr Yip continues to perform urgent coronary interventions for acute heart attacks, his clinical interests have evolved to focus on preventative cardiology, with an emphasis on patient empowerment and involvement in long-term cardiac care. His specialist areas of interest include:

• Cardiorenal medicine

• Diseases of the aorta

• Heart disease in women

He has a particular interest in the overlap between cardiac and renal disease and completed his Master of Science dissertation examining the use of advanced speckle-tracking echocardiography to study the impact of chronic kidney disease on the heart. Following his research in this field, he was invited to join the 2018 KDIGO working group in Vienna, contributing to international guidelines on the management of coronary artery and valvular heart disease in patients with kidney disease. He has since been invited again by the International Society of Nephrology to participate in an upcoming expert meeting in Amsterdam in October 2025.

Dr Yip also holds a deep interest in diseases of the aorta, which is an ongoing area of research and has published in the prestigious journal Aorta. He has been fortunate to be a co-author with Professor Karen Sliwa on some of her research in heart disease in pregnancy. He was an invited speaker on the topic of heart diseases in women in 2009 and most recently at a conference held by the South African Menopause Society in Pretoria in February 2025. He is a Fellow of several international medical societies, including:

• The Royal College of Physicians of London

• The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh

• The European Society of Cardiology

• The American College of Cardiology

In addition to his medical qualifications, Dr Yip holds a master’s degree in medical law from the University of Edinburgh. His dissertation argued that doctors should be immune from civil liabilities with the challenges provided by pandemic medicine. He also has a keen interest in the protection of patients’ personal and genetic data, and the legal regulations and patient protections surrounding AI use in medicine.

For the past 19 years, Dr Yip has run a successful private practice in Fourways. He is now pleased to relocate his practice to Morningside Medi-Clinic, a well-established hospital with a reputation for excellence in the heart of Africa’s golden mile for the last 42 years.
